Why Terminology Matters in the Weight Room

Walk into any gym or open a fitness app and you're immediately met with shorthand: 3×10, AMRAP, progressive overload. For beginners, this language creates an unnecessary barrier. Even experienced exercisers sometimes use these terms loosely, which can lead to poorly structured workouts.

Repetition (Rep)

One complete execution of an exercise movement — for example, lowering and raising a dumbbell once during a curl. Reps are the basic unit of any resistance training workout.

Set

A group of consecutive repetitions performed without stopping to rest. A workout might call for three sets of ten reps, written as 3×10.

1RM (One-Rep Max)

The maximum amount of weight a person can lift for exactly one full repetition of an exercise with proper form. It is used as a reference point to calculate training loads as percentages.

Progressive Overload

The principle of gradually increasing the demand placed on the body over time — through added weight, more reps, more sets, or reduced rest — to continue driving adaptation. It is considered a foundational principle of effective resistance training.

Hypertrophy

An increase in the size of muscle cells, resulting in visibly larger muscles. Hypertrophy is a primary goal of bodybuilding-style training and is also associated with general strength development.

Tempo

The speed at which you perform each phase of a repetition — typically described as a four-digit sequence (e.g., 3-1-2-0) representing the eccentric, pause, concentric, and reset phases in seconds.

Eccentric Phase

The portion of a lift where the muscle lengthens under load — for example, the lowering phase of a squat or the downward motion of a bicep curl. Eccentric loading is strongly associated with muscle growth and soreness.

Concentric Phase

The portion of a lift where the muscle shortens and generates force against resistance — such as standing up from the bottom of a squat or curling a weight upward.

Superset

Performing two exercises back-to-back with little or no rest between them. Supersets can target the same muscle group (for intensity) or opposing muscle groups (for efficiency).

AMRAP

An acronym for 'As Many Reps (or Rounds) As Possible.' AMRAP sets are performed to or near muscular failure within a set time or until form breaks down significantly.

Deload

A planned period of reduced training volume or intensity — usually lasting one week — intended to allow the body to recover, reduce accumulated fatigue, and return to training with renewed capacity.

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)

A subjective scale used to rate how hard an exercise feels, typically from 1 to 10. In strength training, RPE 10 means maximal effort with no reps left in reserve; RPE 7 means three or more reps could still be completed.

Rep Ranges and Training Goals
