The two highest-risk periods align with natural troughs in the human circadian rhythm — the body's internal 24-hour clock that regulates alertness and sleep. The first and most dangerous is between midnight and 6 a.m. The second is the mid-afternoon window between roughly 2 and 4 p.m., which affects even well-rested drivers.

Other compounding risk factors include:

  • Taking medications with sedative side effects
